The project has included a series of integrated interventions with specific purposes as briefly listed below:
- The existing piers and abutments: in masonry, with a pseudo-rectangular section by gravity, previously consolidated with concrete linings.
- Redevelopment of the Passenger Building and outdoor areas;
- New rainwater disposal systems;
- Reconfiguration of the connections with the pedestrian underpass, with adaptation of the mixed pedestrian walkway inside it, and new lifts;
- Reconfiguration of the pedestrian ramp on the valley side;
- Functional adaptation of the systems.
The intervention in question, in addition to the mere regulatory adaptation, has among its main purposes that of a functional and architectural adaptation linked to the conditions of comfort and accessibility for passengers in transit and for the overcoming of architectural barriers.
The intervention falls into the category of works pursuant to Article 3 of Presidential Decree 380/2001 and subsequent amendments paragraph 1 and 3 and Presidential Decree 130/2010, Annex 1, points 10 and 13.
Redevelopment and expansion
As part of the redevelopment project of the Passenger Building and the external areas, of the Ferentino Station, on the Rome – Naples section, via Cassino, the expansion of the appurtenant parking areas has also been planned thanks to a ground modeling work that involves the insertion of retaining walls. The reconfiguration of the connections with the pedestrian underpass and the improvement of the mixed pedestrian walkway, with the insertion of new lifts, were necessary above all in order to ensure total accessibility thanks to the removal of pre-existing architectural barriers.
Redevelopment of the passenger building
The state of the passenger building was far from the original layout documented in the photo of the time dated 1918. The plastic decorative elements of the facades, the openings on the ground floor surmounted by arches as well as the tympanum covering the current side of track 1 have been lost.
On the Rome side there was a superfetation that housed the toilets of the station. The design intervention, in addition to the recovery and functional adaptation of the interiors, has provided for an architectural redevelopment of the building as a whole, in this sense a new and different characterization of the low body of the services has been developed with the aim of highlighting the extraneousness of the added volume and leaving a clearer legibility of the volume of the original building. This characterization has been implemented through a system of metal "pellets" in striped mesh which has a contemporary character of the language also in relation to a broader and more organic set of interventions including the new station shelters, the adaptation of the platforms to the metropolitan standard, the expansion of the relevant parking lots, the regulation of access through turnstiles, the demolition of the pedestrian overpass and the installation of new vertical connections with the existing underpass.
