Rome-Formia line hydraulic protection works
Roma/Formia, Italy
Executive design of the interventions aimed at increasing the system of regimentation and conveyance of surface and deep water in the southern area of the Mont'Orso tunnel (located between km 88+967 and km 96+498 of the Rome-Formia railway line).

The service included the topographic survey, geognostic and structural investigations, geological-geotechnical, hydraulic and structural study, historical reconstruction for the state of affairs and design activities with the drafting of technical notes and graphic drawings aimed at sizing the interventions.
Specifically, it is possible to identify the following design phases:
- Phase 1, design for the maintenance of the water disposal system inside the tunnel from the source and consolidation of the tunnel lining near the southern entrance, Formia side (partially completed);
- Phase 2, design for the regimentation of water outside and near the southern entrance, Formia side (completed);
- Phase 3, geological-hydraulic study and determination of surface water regimentation solutions in the southern area of the tunnel (in progress).
Hydraulic issues
The problems of a hydraulic nature, which are also potential causes of structural instability (leaching of mortars and instability of blocks), have therefore required immediate interventions to adapt and waterproof the cable lining, as well as a more in-depth geological-hydraulic study to identify possible solutions for the regimentation of surface water that reduce the flow into the tunnel.
Problem identification
The identification of the basin and the hydrographic network was carried out automatically using the open source HEC-HMS program using a DTM.
